Bloom AI is an AI tutor platform helping schools support their students 24/7. For founder Gary Liang, the mission is clear: make personalised learning accessible to every student, whenever they need it.
From Star Student to Teacher to Entrepreneur
Gary has always been passionate about learning. He excelled as a student - topping his high school cohort and graduating university with a perfect GPA - and went on to start his own tutoring business.
But teaching showed him the cracks in the system. “Some students just weren’t getting the support they needed,” Gary explains. “Everyone learns differently, but teachers in large classrooms can’t always cater to each student’s style.”
The research agreed. Benjamin Bloom’s famous “Two Sigma Problem” showed that students with one-on-one tutoring performed two whole standard deviations better than their peers in traditional classrooms. In simple terms: with the right support, the average student could perform like a top 5% student. The problem? Tutoring everyone one-on-one just isn’t practical.
The “Aha” Moment with AI
Gary tried tackling the challenge with a brick-and-mortar tutoring centre, but quickly ran into limits. “You just can’t scale a tutoring business easily,” he says. After some time in consulting, he found himself watching the rapid rise of AI tools like GPT. That’s when it clicked.
“I immediately connected the dots,” he recalls. “AI could make previously unscalable activities scalable. Education products need to be hyper-personalised - and AI has the power to do that.”
So Gary rolled up his sleeves and started building Bloom AI.
With a unique architecture built on top of large language models, Bloom AI adapts to each student’s learning preferences, delivering tailored support around the clock. Educators have full control and visibility, and Bloom encourages curiosity, rather than giving the answer away.
Navigating the Legal Grey Areas
Of course, building an AI business comes with legal challenges. Data ownership, privacy, intellectual property, and evolving regulations all create uncertainty.
“There are still a lot of grey areas,” Gary says. “Who owns what data? What’s considered responsible use of AI? For us, it’s not just about ticking legal boxes - it’s about doing the right thing by our users.”
Why Sprintlaw?
With so many unanswered legal questions, Gary knew he needed expert help. But going to a big law firm wasn’t realistic for a startup. “I couldn’t spend thousands on legal fees, and I didn’t want cookie-cutter templates,” he says.
That’s when he turned to Sprintlaw. Our subscription model meant Gary could book calls when he needed, and get advice tailored specifically to Bloom AI’s stage and risks.
“That was the real draw card for me,” Gary explains. “Sprintlaw took the time to understand what I was building. It gave me confidence to keep moving forward, knowing the legal side was covered.”
From privacy compliance to contracts and IP protections, Sprintlaw has helped Bloom AI lay a strong foundation to scale safely and responsibly.
What’s Next for Bloom AI
Gary’s journey is just beginning. Bloom AI is already helping students access hyper-personalised support, but his vision is bigger: a future where every learner, no matter their background, has access to the kind of tailored education that unlocks their full potential.
At Sprintlaw, we’re proud to have supported Gary on this journey. Stories like Bloom AI’s remind us why we do what we do: helping innovators tackle complex challenges with bold ideas - and giving them the legal confidence to make it happen.
